This Should Be the Starting Question

The notion of estate planning, in my experience, is too amorphous, distant, and broad for most clients.   A  more-focused starting question that helps frame estate planning is “What do you want for your situation if you were to become incapacitated tomorrow?  Who will handle your affairs and step into your shoes as to you and your family?  And, how?”

Within this framework, the other elements for the planning also can be added, such as asset protection and estate planning.   This approach gives the client a much better and more realistic perspective on this process.
